Starfish MGA Overview Presentation
Meg McBurney, co-founder of Starfish, provided an overview of the company's background and product offerings. She explained that Starfish is an MGA Specialty MGA launched in 2021, focusing on specialty insurance solutions and partnering with highly-rated carriers. Meg outlined Starfish's five program silos, including real estate investors, community associations, aviation, PEOs and staffing firms, and crisis management, with the Active Assailant product falling under the Crisis Management program. She emphasized Starfish's approach of engaging in a transparent and collaborative underwriting process with brokers to find suitable solutions.
Active Assailant Insurance Program Overview
Karl Seebacher, Program Manager for the Active Assailant Insurance Program, presented an overview of the program's coverage structure and benefits. He explained that the policy provides primary coverage with no deductibles or waiting periods, offering immediate benefits to both the business and victims in the event of an active assailant attack. The coverage includes business income loss, extra expenses, security measures, public relations support, and third-party legal liability, as well as benefits for injured victims on a no-fault basis. Karl demonstrated the online quoting portal and highlighted the broad eligibility for various business types, emphasizing the program's unique approach to addressing active assailant events.
Active Assailant Insurance Quoting Portal
Carl demonstrated the online quoting portal for active assailant insurance coverage, explaining key rating factors including entity type, number of locations, employees, and daily foot traffic. He walked through the complete quoting process, including entering business details, selecting coverage limits up to $5 million, and available endorsements like property damage coverage and employee protection off-premises. The process typically takes less than 7 minutes and produces an immediate quote unless it requires further review. Margret asked a question about how to handle strip malls where customer counts might not be available for each individual business, though the answer was not captured in the transcript.
Active Assailant Insurance Policy Discussion
Karl and Margret discussed an active assailant insurance policy, covering eligibility, coverage details, and claims process. They explained that the policy provides first-dollar coverage for crisis management, business interruption, and victim support, distinguishing it from general liability insurance which only responds after a lawsuit is filed. The policy requires either a substantiated threat or a physical weapon presence on the property to trigger coverage, with a minimum limit of $1 million and no independent umbrella coverage available. Karl noted that while many businesses are eligible, certain high-risk industries like apartment communities and adult entertainment venues are difficult to cover, though he can access alternative markets for specific cases.
